Goat Terminology

Listed below are some helpful goat terms. Please note these are only my personal definitions.

Doe - female, mother goat
Buck - male, father goat
Doeling - young, female goat, that's never given birth
Buckling - young, male goat, that's not sired a kid yet
Kid - young goat
Wether - castrated male goat
Yearling - a goat one year old or in the second year of its age
CAE - caprine arthritis encephalitis (CAE) is a viral infection of goats which may lead to chronic disease of the joints and on rare occasions encephalitis in goat kids less then six months of age
Nubian - Also called Anglo-Nubian, the Nubian is considered a dual-purpose goat breed used for milk and meat production. This breed was developed in England and is a composite of dairy goat breeds from India, Europe, and Africa. Brought into the USA at the beginning of the 20th century, the Nubian has become the most popular US dairy goat breed, with over 100,000 registered breeding stock.
Caprine - adj. ('ka-"prIn) of, relating to, or being a goat

SS : Sire's Sire or Paternal Grandfather
SD : Sire's Dam or Paternal Grandmother
DS : Dam's Sire or Maternal Grandfather
DD : Dam's Dam or Maternal Grandmother
SSS, SSD, SDS, SDD, DSS, DSD, DDS, DDD : You get the picture!
